Parking Alert: South Mountain Reservation Parking - 5/24/01

There have been many questions about when and how we will use South Mountain Reservation for Parking. The time has come.

We are expecting at least 300 additional cars on each Orientation day. In the spirit of cooperation and in order to better serve the needs of our future students and families, we encourage you to help minimize the number of cars on campus during Orientation sessions by choosing one of the following options on Orientation days:
  • ride to work with someone whose tag number is not effected that day
  • if you live close enough, walk or bike to work
  • use public transportation
  • be dropped off and picked up
  • ask your supervisor to make one of the Orientation dates a compressed work or (administrators only) telecommute day

We will be using the lawn area in front of the University Center for our guests. Your cooperation is essential to the success of this program.

Orientation dates:

  • May 31-June 1
  • June 4-5
  • June 25-26
  • June 28-29.
    8 days total

South Mountain Reservation Parking is being assigned by Summer Hangtag number on a rotating basis. Shuttle bus service will operate between the campus and South Mountain 7 AM - 9 AM and again from 4:45 PM - 7 PM. Transportation to your vehicle can be arranged should an emergency arise during the day by calling the Department of Public Safety and Security at ext. 9300 between 9 AM - 4 PM. A County Police Officer and two Security Guards will supervise the parking area at South Mountain Reservation from 6:30 AM - 7:30 PM. All cars must be removed by 7:30 PM.

    May 31-June 1 and June 25-26 Orientations:
Summer tag numbers SP2002 - SP2538 are required to park at the South Mountain Reservation unless you are exempted below.

June 4-5 and June 28-29 Orientations:
Summer tag numbers SP2539 - SP5000+ are required to park at the South Mountain Reservation unless you are exempted below.

Exempt from parking at South Mountain Reservation: Employees of Physical Plant, Gourmet Dining Services, Ring Building, St. Andrew's, all faculty, all students, all resident clergy, tags marked "HC" and administrators and staff whose tag number does not fall in the ranges listed above on a given date.

If you have any questions about this process please contact Donald Tauriello ext. 9328

IMPORTANT REMINDER: The Village of South Orange has its own rules about street parking. Please be mindful of our neighbor's regulations. Please read their signs carefully. Some streets are "permit parking only". We have inquired about obtaining a list of regulations by street and are waiting to see if the Village can provide us with that information if it is available. If we receive it we will post in on the construction web site.

    Directions to South Mountain Reservation:

Going WEST (away from Seton Hall University) on South Orange Avenue, go past The Top Condominiums and turn LEFT onto Crest Drive. Drive straight in, going beyond the first small parking area you will see on your right.

Going EAST (coming toward Seton Hall University) on South Orange Avenue, just before The Top Condominiums, turn RIGHT onto Crest Drive. Drive straight in going beyond the first small parking area you will see on your right.

A County Police Officer and two security guards will direct you to where we are parking! They will be posted at South Mountain Reservation all day while your vehicles are there.

    Bus Schedule:
We have contracted two busses to run from South Mountain Reservation to campus and back from 6:30 AM (the bus should be waiting for anyone arriving by 7 AM to bring the first load to campus) until 9:00 AM (last bus will leave the reservation at 9 AM.) Since we are expecting congestion at the Main Gate, the busses will unload and pick up at the intersection of Madison and Seton Avenue (by the Walsh Library).

Between 9 AM and 4 PM the Department of Public Safety and Security will have a vehicle available to make emergency runs should something unexpected come up and you need to get your car. Arrangements can be made by calling ext. 9300.

The busses will resume the shuttle run from campus to South Mountain Reservation from 4:30 PM (first bus will leave campus at 4:45 PM) until 7 PM (last run to the South Mountain Reservation will leave campus at 7 PM.)

Traffic will impact the bus schedule but we will do our best to keep them moving in a systematic fashion.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation!
