1 LOGIN
The following is a brief review of how we got here. (You might want to take some notes at this time.)
At the Login Screen type the following:
username: first initial last name (No space ,may be slightly different if you have a common last name. Try it first then ask instructor.)
password: your social security number (no dashes)
domain: YC_LNET (need not be capitalized)
The Domain is important but you most likely will not need to change it on the lab computers.

2 MOUSE BASICS
  • From now on "Click" or "Pick" means click the left mouse button.
  • "Right Click" means click the right mouse button.
  • We will not need the middle mouse button.
  • "Double Click" means click the left mouse button twice very quickly. (Not roughly!)
  • "Drag" means to point at the object to be dragged and hold the left mouse button while moving the mouse. Once the "destination" has been reached release the button.

4 TERMINOLOGY
  • WEB SITE - A computer somewhere in the world setup to share information over phone lines.
  • WEB Page - Information (text and graphics) organized and named. Many pages contain links to other sites or pages.
  • LINK - A "hot spot" on the screen that when "Clicked" will locate and load another WEB page. Underlined words and many pictures are links. One way to detect a link is to move the mouse pointer over a "suspected" link. If the mouse arrow changes to a hand you are on a link. Click the left mouse button to go to the link. To go back in the trail of links use the BACK button on the Netscape toolbar or "Right Click" and pick BACK.
  • URL - Uniform Resource Locator - The address of a WEB Page at a Site.
  • BOOKMARKS - A list of WEB addresses (URLs) that you can save for easy access to information you have found in a previous session.
  • SEARCH ENGINES - A site that has a database (list) of WEB addresses and a program to sort and search the database. Using Search Engines is one good way to find WEB information. Some examples are WEB Crawler, Alta Vista, HotBot, YAHOO. You can use the NET SEARCH button on the toolbar to access many of these searching tools.

5 BOOKMARKS
This exercise is to save the location of this page for future reference. This is called "Bookmarking."
  • "Pick" BookMarks from the menu and look at the list of sites currently in the list.
  • The site we are looking at is called "Internet Info." You should note it is not on our list of bookmarks. Let's put it on the list.
  • "Pick" BookMarks from the menu.
  • "Pick" Add BookMark from the choices on this menu.
  • Look at the list of bookmarks again to see that it is now saved on that list.
  • NOTE: The bookmark list is saved on this computer. If you want your bookmarks available somewhere else you must save them on a floppy diskette or your network drive M.

6 TAKE EGYPTIAN QUIZ
  • "Pick" Unit One
  • "Pick" Egypt Button
  • "Pick" Quiz
  • Take quiz and "click" on mark and mail button at the bottom of the quiz. You will be able to review your score and the score was automatically e-mailed to your instructor.

7 SEARCH ENGINES
You will now go to a Search Engine and try to locate some information.
(Read all the instructions before going on.)

  • Once at the "MetaCrawler" page, enter "Paleolithic" in the box as shown below.
