Introduction to the Elements of Design
The elements are parts of a composition which can be isolated and defined in any visual design or work of art. They are the structure of the work, and can carry a wide variety of messages.
What we discuss today will begin to help us form a vocabulary that will enable us to discuss the various elements of art in terms that are universally understood.
We'll also begin to learn about the principles that will allow us to deepen our appreciation of art by knowing what to look for and being able to better identify some of the challenges an artist deals with in creating a work of art.
S.I. Hayakawa stated:
"The language of vision determines, perhaps even more than subtly and thoroughly than verbal languages, the structure of our consciousness."
And Duane and Sarah Preble, authors of Artforms, explain by saying:
"Since words and visual images are two different `languages,' talking about visual arts with words is always an act of translation — and is one step removed from actually experiencing art. Ultimately, our eyes have their own connections to our minds and emotions. Only by cultivating these connections are we able to take full advantage of what art has to offer."
So, in order to begin to cultivate our connections, we will embark on a study of the visual elements.
